Francophone newspapers have traditionally played a major role in the preservation, promotion, and remodelling of the Francophone culture and identity. Since the middle of the nineteenth century, Western provinces have hosted several French-speaking newspapers, including L’Ouest canadien, Le Patriote, and La Liberté – some of which have survived to the present day. While several of these newspapers have been digitized and are currently available on the Peel’s Prairie Provinces database, little research has been conducted on them to date. The purpose of this website is to provide access to multimedia resources that will shed light on various aspects of the history of francophone newspapers in Western Canada from the mid-nineteenth century to the mid-twentieth century. Resources include a selection of columns written by Francophone female journalist Marie Louise (a.k.a Magali) Michelet (1883-1906) who lived in Alberta from 1906 to 1917
