This sung-through musical is about four thirty-something friends who tell each other everything and nothing. While they may be "the best of friends" they keep much of what they feel to themselves in order to keep the laughter and cocktails flowing, and, above all, to keep the façade of happy lives intact, leaving them in states of disconnection and isolation. When a typical weekend takes an unexpected turn, each of them realizes in different ways and to different degrees that they are not living the lives they had hoped for. When We Were Singing explores the public selves we present and the private selves we often try to hide. Through ensemble and solo work, the characters' truest selves are revealed.
